Computer System Design Question.?
I built my Computer in 2007 with the following components
Core 2 Duo 2.2GHZ
3GB DDR 2
NVIDIA P5NE SLI Motherboard (Socket 775)
2x 250GB HDD
VIDIA 8800GTX 712MB in SLI
Windows XP SP2
I am now looking to upgrade a little.
I have a $500AU Budget for hardware. I am mostly looking at getting a new processor and possibly a new motherboard as o feel they don’t take full advantage of my GPU Chipset.
Any recommendation for a processor and/or motherboard?
My machine is mostly for gaming and multimedia.
I notice your motherboard will support a E8500/E8600, with the latest BIOS update.

The E8600 (3.33 GHz) seems like too much money, at $260, but the E8500 (3.16GHz) is a complete no-brainer at $174.

Considering your current setup must be somewhat CPU limited, with a Core 2 Duo @ 2.2 GHz, adding a Core 2 Duo with a larger cache, and 900 MHz faster, seems like a very effective way to get your video cards running at 100% of their capability (for the first time).
