What would be the best way to make this computer a server?

After finding out that it would be cheaper to buy a new computer instead of upgrade, I am looking for the cheapest way to make it a server.

Mainboard: Trigem Computer, Inc. Cognac
Chipset: Intel i810
Processor: Intel Celeron @ 633 MHz
Physical Memory: 192 MB
Video Card: Intel (R) 82810 Graphics Controller (Microsoft Corporation)
Hard Disk: WDC (40 GB)
Hard Disk: WDC (80 GB)
CD-Rom Drive: Lite-On CD-RW SOHR-5238S
Monitor Type: Samsung SyncMaster - 17 Inches
Network Card: DFE-528TX/530TX+/538TX Fast Ethernet Adapter (DL 10038C Chipset)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition 5.02.2600 Service Pack 3
DirectX: Version 9.0c

Important thing to ask is what kind of server do you need?

If you need SAMBA shares or a web server, Linux is probably going to be the cheapest solution for you. Though, the hard drive space is a little bit low. If you want Domain Controllers/Active Directory, you're going to need Windows Server (either 2003 or 2008). Windows Server OS is rather expensive... I recently built a server for a client, and Windows Server 2008 ran us close to $700 for a basic 5 license.

I'd recommend swapping out you hard drives for bigger models, 10k RPM if you have the money to blow... but given your other system specs, I doubt you'll benefit. Also pick up two 5.25 inch hard drive racks/enclosures so you can make the hard drives hot swappable. Then, purchase a cheap RAID controller and put them into RAID 1. You could forgo the RAID controller and use software raid, but judging by your system specs, you'd be limited to IDE hard drives.

Monitor, keyboard, and mouse are not necessary for a server.

I'd recommend going for an Intel Atom motherboard/cpu and an ITX case. They're cheap, capable of running Windows Server 2003, and have low power consumption and low noise.
