RTA Cabinets: Are They Right For You?
Before you ask, RTA is not a brand name. RTA kitchen cabinets are Ready to Assemble. Most kitchen cabinets that you buy online will be RTA. This will, for example, save you considerable money as opposed to buying ready-made kitchen cabinet boxes from your local hardware store.
The reasons for ready to assemble cabinets rather than fully assembled cabinetry is that first of all its substantially cheaper to ship them this way, and secondly there is a much greater chance of their arrival unscathed and unblemished in transit. Many cabinet buyers worry that RTA means that the cabinets are very difficult to put together. While understandable, that fear's pretty unjustified.
The ready to assemble cabinets of today come equipped with special hardware that makes them extremely easy to put together. You usually only need a single screwdriver and a drill to assemble the cabinets. This is thanks to a joining system called a cam lock. Cam locks can be made from metal or plastic.
The cabinets that you purchase as RTA kitchen cabinets will usually have ? inch plywood sides, tops and bottoms. Sizes can vary, but shelves tend to be made from 5/8 plywood. Drawer boxes are often made of plywood, as well. Drawer slides are either side mounted or under mounted, though most manufacturers make them side mounted. The most expensive types of drawer slides are under mounted, and they're either self closing our soft-closing. Depending on the model of RTA cabinet, you might have a choice of several hardware options, allowing you to customize the cabinet's pulls and handles.
Big box stores often use cardboard and particle board in their ktichen cabinetry. You usually don't have to worry about this with RTA cabinets, as they're usually made of the aforementioned plywood, which is far more durable than those other materials. In addition, chances are that RTA cabinets will have dovetail construction for drawers, as opposed to some of the big box kitchen cabinet stores that simply glue their drawers together. Many of the more expensive RTA cabinets also use a clear coat sealant. You can easily clean these types of cabinets, and the coating looks nice.
The type of assembly instructions you will be given are of course extremely important. Many RTA cabinet manufacturers offer a sample of their assembly instructions. Manufacturers' websites may even have instructions. Read the sample instructions and see if they are clear and concise. Some manufacturers also include a toll free number for you to use should you require more instructions or have any questions. If you're buying online, quickly checking the instructions can tell you whether you're dealing with a reputable seller of RTA kitchen cabinets.
Don't go for the cheapest seller of RTA cabinets you can find--look into their credentials to make sure you're dealing with a company that's been around for a while. It's much better to deal with a reputable company when buying RTA kitchen cabinets, as this ensures high quality, long lasting, and easy to assemble cabinets that will last you for years.
