What is a server, and what does it do?

I have heard of running a home server, and I have seen things called servers that cost like 3000 and look like flat computers, usually sporting some dual opteron or xeon processor. Can someone explain what an online, and home server do that I should know?

well it depends on what kind of server you want to run. you can turn any machine into a server just by running server software like microsoft server 2003. they usually do have high processing capabilities because they handle lots of clients. but with server 2003, there are many services you can offer to people such as dsn, dhcp, and IIS which is a web server technology for hosting web sites. but really, a server is just a machine that provides some sort of service for multiple machines and/or applications.
